Algeria/Oran hosts the 11th session of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa on December 1-2

On December 1-2, 2024, the city of Oran will host the 11th session of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, which has established itself as an essential platform for discussion and reflection on peace and security issues on the African continent, according to a press release issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs.
Created in 2013, at Algeria's initiative, the Seminar has established itself as the main forum for coordination between the three African members of the Security Council (A3) and the members of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), with the aim of defending common African positions and strengthening a united and influential African diplomacy.
The session will be attended by AU PSC members, African sitting members, incoming and outgoing members of the Security Council, as well as the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, representing Latin America and the Caribbean.representing Latin America and the Caribbean on the Security Council within the A3+1 mechanism, in addition to the AU Commission, the UN, and the Seminar's friends and partners.
At this session, Algeria plays a dual role as host and initiator of the Seminar, and as a member of the African Group (A3) on the Security Council for the period 2024-2025.
The Seminar reflects Algeria's firm commitment to strengthening joint African action to find African solutions to African challenges, and provides an opportunity to consolidate efforts to strengthen the African bloc within multilateral international bodies.
The 11th session will address a number of key issues, including : strengthening coordination between the AU PSC and the three African members of the Security Council, with a view to making Africa's voice heard in this body and effectively defending common African positions on issues relating to peace and securitythe fight against terrorism and violent extremism, by strengthening the integrated capacities of African states to meet these challenges these challenges, focusing on the role of the African Union Counter-Terrorism Center (AUCTC), on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its creation.
The meeting will also discuss the implementation of the "Pact for the Future", adopted by the UN General Assembly (GA) last September, in particular with regard to the reform of the UN Security Council and the activation of Security Council Resolution 2719 on the financing of AU-led peace support operations.
The Oran Seminar, institutionalized as the "Oran Process", represents a strategic platform for strengthening joint African action, and provides a roadmap for African diplomacy to support the continent's efforts in the field of peacebuilding. support the continent's efforts to achieve security and stability, and strengthen its active presence in international decision-making.
