Burkina Faso/Emergency aid: The Chinese Red Cross trains young people in cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
The Chinese Red Cross, in collaboration with the Burkinabe Red Cross, is organizing a training course on resuscitation techniques and emergency management for young people. The training aims to raise awareness of the importance of first aid, but also to train young people to be able to give emergency aid in the event of cardiac arrest. The training takes place this Friday, October 11, 2024 in Ouagadougou.
The training is provided by staff from the Chinese Red Cross. They are Dr Chen Daohu, cardiac surgeon, Dr Zhu Lin, emergency physician, Dr Feng Guangzhao, cardiologist, and Wang Jinwen, extracorporeal circulation perfectionist.
"Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is an important life-saving technique in emergency situations. As a rule, irreversible brain damage can occur after 4 to 6 minutes of cardiac arrest. If cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed within one minute, the success rate rises to 90%; if it is delayed by 6 to 8 minutes, the success rate is aroundIf the delay exceeds 10 minutes, the success rate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is almost zero. Therefore, when someone suffers a cardiac arrest, the immediate implementation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the key to saving lives. We hope that this training and exchange will enable everyone to react correctly at the right moment and effectively implement cardiopulmonary resuscitation," said Camelia, the training's translator.
According to the translator, cardiac arrest can happen anywhere. It can happen at work, in the supermarket, at home and so on. So everyone needs to be trained in emergency first aid.
Daouda Savadogo, head of training at the Burkinabe Red Cross and also head of the first aid project, pointed out that the Burkinabe Red Cross is in a good position when it comes to first aid. It provides a great deal of training in this field. "With the Chinese Red Cross, the aim is to share experiences in this field and see what avenues of collaboration are possible in the area of first aid. Because in terms of training skills, the Burkinabe Red Cross has enough, but there are a few areas where it is still seeking support, particularly in terms of first-aid equipment. More and more, our fields of action are expanding. We are setting up training relay units in many provinces. And given the current situation, we need to train as many people as possible in first aid. Unfortunately, what is often lacking is training materials", stressed the head of training at the Burkinabe Red Cross.
