In the minutes of the Council of Ministers meeting held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Robert Lucien Jean Claude Kargougou, unveiled the results of the third round (P2) of the seasonal malaria chemoprevention plus (CPS+) campaign for 2024 in Burkina Faso.

Key figures to remember

Chimio prevention of seasonal malaria is a major malaria control intervention implemented in Burkina Faso since 2014. The target population is children aged 03 to 59 months.

The third run of the 2024 CPS+ campaign involved 70 health districts and took place from August 23 to 26.

A total of 1,215,474 concessions were visited, in which 771,229 breeding sites were identified, of which 564,221 were immediately destroyed, representing a rate of 73.16%.

For this campaign, out of an expected target of 4,523,095 children, 4,605,532 were not only screened and treated for malaria, but also for malnutrition and catch-up malaria vaccination. This represents an administrative coverage rate of 101.82%.

Results from the field are as follows:
- 8,924 rapid malaria diagnostic tests were carried out, detecting 4,733 cases of malaria, of which 4,411 were treated, a rate of 93.19%;

- 47,190 moderately acutely malnourished children were screened, including 9,709 new cases, and 3,256 cases of severe acute malnutrition were detected;

- 73,134 children in the malaria vaccine target group were found, including 8,399 who were not up to date with their vaccinations.

A demographic extension made it possible to include children aged 5 to 9 in six health districts during this round. As a result, 281,165 of the 293,627 children in this age group were treated, a rate of 95.76%.

On the whole, this third round (P2) of CPS+ went well. The fourth round is scheduled for September 20 to 23, 2024, for a target of 557,700 children aged 03 to 59 months.
