DRC/North Kivu: launch of a food security project for 1,860 displaced households

On Wednesday February 21, the Centre de développement rural de Kibututu (CEDERU) in Goma, North Kivu, launched a food security support project for 1,860 households of the most vulnerable displaced persons and host families in the CEPROMI/Biyongi health area.

According to engineer Paul Muhasa, CEDERU coordinator, this project aims to meet the food needs of these families by giving them cash; and also to provide them with agricultural inputs and technical support enabling them to subsist for the period from February to July.

"This will help to improve the food security situation for these displaced people, as well as for the host families who took them in," explains engineer Paul Muhasa.

He pointed out that, according to surveys carried out, 80% of displaced households have no access to food; and the poor food consumption score is estimated at 83%; and that at the CEPROMI center, 270 cases of global malnutrition have been recorded, including 27 severe cases in pregnant women.

Financed by the DRC's Humanitarian Fund for a period of 6 months, this project also aims to improve emergency livelihoods for populations made vulnerable by the M23 security crisis, in the Kibirizi health zone in Rutshuru territory.
