Algeria/This city of Algeria is one of the oldest cities in the world according to Unesco!
Constantine, otherwise known as : City of the suspended bridges, City of the old rock or City of the eagles, exists since III centuries BC. It has gone through different conquests, wars and dominations to become today the capital of Eastern Algeria.
A city founded by the Phoenicians, three centuries BC
This city is known as the ancient Cirta of the third century BC, capital of the Numidian kingdom. In the year 311 AD, the city was totally ravaged by Maxentius, but was quickly rebuilt by the emperor Constantine, who gave it his name. Hence its current name.
After the Arab conquest in the 7th century, the arrival of the Umayyads and the Abbasids, the Aghlabids and the Fatimids, the city also passed through the Turkish domination in the 16th century.
This is not all, the history of Constantine is also marked by its hold by a dynasty coming from Béjaïa from the XIth to the XIIth century and by the dynasty of Hafsides from the XIIIth to the XVth century. Finally, it entered under the French colonization on October 13, 1837. Having preserved the historical testimonies of all these periods, Constantine became part of the Algerian national heritage in 2004 .
Constantine: at the heart of a preservation and sustainable management project
Being the largest inland metropolis of Algeria, Constantine ensures a number of important functions of an industrial nature but especially from a cultural point of view. Moreover, this city holds several historical monuments, including the medina which is the richest architectural and historical heritage of the country. It is worth noting that it became a national heritage site in 1990.
Constantine is twinned with Grenoble, located in France, since 1999. The two cities have been operating since 2003 a decentralized cooperation for youth, civil society, health, institutional cooperation and economic development.
However, this historical heritage is threatened with disappearance, hence the realization of a technical mission to raise the need to add a "heritage" component to the cooperation between the city of Grenoble and Constantine.
