Belgium's first Gamestate opened its doors on Wednesday in the pedestrian zone of Brussels, on the Boulevard Anspach. The arcade offers visitors about 50 video games and other activities.

Gamestate arcades are extremely popular in the Netherlands. The one in Amsterdam, for example, had about 250,000 people last year. The concept comes from America, where large arcades have long been established. Eight Gamestate arcades are now open in the Netherlands, Germany opened one a fortnight ago and now it's Brussels' turn.

For gaming fans and newcomers alike

Gamestate wants to attract both game fans and newcomers. Many video game classics are available such as Pong, Moto GP, Pacman, Mario Kart or Tomb Raider. But also mechanical games such as airhockey or pinball. With a card loaded with money, players can earn points by playing different games. These points can then be spent on prizes.

Access is allowed for all ages, but minors must be accompanied by an adult. "We do this so we don't become a daycare. Otherwise, parents drop their children off and go shopping," explains Roel Veltmeijer, managing director of Gamestate. The playroom opens every day at noon. Access is limited to avoid queues.

After Brussels, the opening of a room in Antwerp is also envisaged. "Lastweek we applied for a permit for Europe's largest gaming hall in Antwerp. We are also considering other cities such as Ghent, Liege or Leuven," Veltmeijer added.
