Chad: contingency plans drawn up for Batha province
A workshop to draw up contingency plans for Batha province was launched on February 19, 2024 by the governor.
The workshop, organized by CARITAS Switzerland's REPAR/Batha project and financed by the SDC, brings together members of the provincial action committee (CPA), technicians from decentralized departments, partners from private institutions and the departmental action committee (CDA), made up of representatives from ANADER, the livestock and environment departments from the province's six departments.es, as well as the Comité Départemental d'Action (CDA), made up of representatives from ANADER, the livestock and environment departments, from the province's six departments. This five-day program will enable participants to fully grasp the concepts and techniques of analysis, so as to carry out relevant analyses leading to the development of an effective contingency plan.
The aim is to provide the province of Batha with contingency plans for the major risks identified by the participants, to prioritize the major risks, to define planning scenarios and assumptions, and to develop an effective contingency plan.narios and planning assumptions, develop contingency preparedness and response plans, and define mechanisms for mobilizing resources for these plans.
REPAR's project manager, Alkhalil Abdoulaye, pointed out that Batha province is experiencing a cyclical and chronic food crisis characterized by a very precarious nutritional situation, particularly during the lean season.
He added that the cumulative effects of successive shocks/hazards on household food security and livelihoods include: floods, recurrent intra-community conflicts, bush fires, agricultural pest attacks, rising staple food prices during the lean season, exacerbated by the crisis in Sudan, negatively impacting household life. This is why the REPAR project aims to support the Batha province in drawing up contingency plans to better prepare and provide rapid responses to households in the event of a disaster.
Opening the workshop to draw up contingency plans for the province of Batha, the governor, Major General Ahmat Goukouni Mourali, reminded participants that these plans are part of the government's disaster preparedness plan.These plans are part of the national action plan for capacity building in disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness and response, with the 2024-2028 country strategy. According to him, these actions are a priority for the country's highest authorities.
The governor took the opportunity to thank CARITAS through its REPAR project and the SDC for their unfailing support to Batha province in various fields. In conclusion, he asked the participants to give their best to meet this challenge.
