With the election by acclamation of a new mayor, the Municipality of Saint-Narcisse-de-Rimouski, which for the past month has been under the provisional administration of the Commission municipale du Québec (CMQ), has regained the quorum required to assume its functions.

The municipal council had lost quorum with the resignation of deputy mayor Gervais Soucy last month.

Only three elected officials remained in office following his resignation.

As a result, the Commission municipale du Québec intervened , placing the municipality under provisional administration.

An election was called by the Commission a few weeks later.

Gervais Soucy was elected unopposed on September 6.

There was going to be an election anyway, so I decided to give up my position as deputy mayor to try and get elected as mayor for the remainder of the one-year term," he explains.

According to the municipal election guide of the Directeur général des élections du Québec, a person who already holds a position on the same municipal council is ineligible in the event of a by-election.

In a post on the Municipality's Facebook page, Director General Vanessa Ruest-Vignola thanks the Commission municipale du Québec for its support and mentions its kind words regarding the administration of the municipality of 1,146 inhabitants.

A special meeting of the municipal council will be held on September 19 at 7 p.m. to inaugurate the resumption of its activities and those of the new mayor.

The citizens of Saint-Narcisse-de-Rimouski will be called to the polls on October 6 to fill the two councillor positions still vacant.
