Canada

In 2025, Magog will be cleaning the water pipe at its drinking water filtration plant to remove zebra mussels. The cost of the cleaning work will be $1.2 million.

A notice of motion was adopted by elected officials at Monday evening's municipal council meeting.

Over the past three years, the town estimates that about three 20-liter pails of zebra mussels have been found in the water filtration plant's pipes.

The town now takes its drinking water directly from Lake Memphremagog .

Mayor Nathalie Pelletier maintains that this is a costly but necessary operation, as zebra mussels multiply rapidly. We're concerned if they clog our water supply pipe, because when we say clog, we mean that the water doesn't pass through as well, and that could damage our infrastructure.

The mayor is reassuring. The water can be consumed and there's no risk of the mussels spreading outside the plant.

But I want to reassure people that zebra mussels have no impact on water quality.

Work is scheduled to begin in summer or fall 2025.
