Algeria-Mauritania: kick-off of the Tindouf-Zouerate road project

On Thursday afternoon in Tindouf, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, together with his brother, the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, kicked off the project to build the road linking Tindouf (Algeria) and Zouerate (Mauritania).

According to explanations given on site, this strategic 840 km road is being built by Algerian companies, enabling Algeria, for the first time since its independence, to build a major infrastructure project outside its borders.

The agreement to build this border project was signed on the sidelines of the state visit by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Assad. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, to Algeria, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in December 2021.

Some ten Algerian companies are involved in this vital project, as well as an Algerian design office in charge of its follow-up.

Once completed, this major project will be operated by Algeria under a 10-year concession, with tacit renewal.The contract for the construction of this infrastructure, so much dreamed of by the inhabitants of the regions through which it passes, will come into force once the work has been completed.

The numerous service stations along the route will be built and operated by Naftal.

The launch of this strategic project, which heralds a new stage in the historic relations between Algeria and Mauritania, should open up important international road routes and give Algerian operators access to African markets via Mauritania.

It will also consolidate economic cooperation between economic operators in the two countries, and boost the economic dynamic and fluidity of trade.
