France/Saint-Lô: "We must succeed in creating a new commune of 30,000 inhabitants

Going back to the population figures unveiled by INSEE, Jacques Declosmenil, on behalf of the Republican and Socialist Left, calls for the creation, around Saint-Lô (Manche), of a new commune of 30,000 inhabitants. A proposal that he had already put forward in 2021.

The Insee (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) released its official figures a few days ago. Saint-Lô Agglo, with 76,494 inhabitants, has seen its population increase slightly. " The city-prefecture is losing inhabitants to its outskirts," notes Jacques Declosmenil, on behalf of the Saint-Lô country committee of the Republican and Socialist Left.

According to the former left-wing elected official, " Saint-Lô, with less than 20,000 inhabitants, does not have the critical mass to be the locomotive of the Saint-Lois region (attraction of executives, researchers, creators, doctors).

Jacques Declosmenil also considers it necessary to "create a new commune of this size. We are convinced, through participatory democracy, that it is possible to convince citizens that the creation of a prefecture town of 30,000 inhabitants can contribute to a better future for all. To achieve this, strong conviction, solid preparatory work, real consultation and the willingness to consult the inhabitants are essential. "

This proposal, Jacques Declosmenil had already put forward in January 2021, with similar arguments. It had not aroused enthusiasm on the part of the mayors of Agneaux, Saint-Georges-Montcocq, La Barre-de-Semilly, Baudre and Saint-André-de-l'Epine, who were contacted by Ouest-France.
