Representatives from 70 riparian countries participated in an international conference on sustainable ocean economy and climate change adaptation, held on May 12-13 in Hanoi in face-to-face and online sessions.

In his opening speech, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thành stressed that the oceans are in danger. They are degrading at an alarming rate due to climate change (sea level rise) and human activities (overexploitation of marine resources and pollution).

The development of a sustainable ocean economy adapted to climate change is an imperative, and this mission involves each of us.To achieve this, respect for the sovereignty and interests of each country, in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is essential, said the Deputy Prime Minister.

Lê Van Thành called on the international community to act immediately to mitigate the consequences of climate change and sea level rise. He proposed to set up a global monitoring and data sharing system to solve the problem of marine environmental pollution and ocean waste. The management of resources and activities at sea requires advanced technologies, he stressed.

"As one of the countries most affected by sea level rise, Vietnam understands the need for a ocean economy that is sustainable and resilient to climate change to ensure the well-being of people and future generations. We will cooperate with countries to protect the oceans and develop a sustainable maritime economy," he said.

Addressing the conference, UN Development Program Director General Achim Steiner said it was an important international conference, helping to affirm Vietnam's position on the international stage, showing it as an active member, partner and supporter of the UN system.showing itself as an active member, reliable and responsible partner, further contributing to the joint efforts of the international community to ensure peace, security and sustainable development, especially in the field of sustainable development, supporting the marine economy, protecting the ocean environment and responding to climate change.

On this occasion, an exhibition on business contributions and initiatives for sustainable economic development of the oceans and adaptation to climate change was opened.
