In Togo, the 2026 edition of “Local Consumption Month” was officially launched on Tuesday, October 6, in Lomé. Scheduled to run through October 31, this year’s initiative emphasizes the role of local consumption in regional integration and the strengthening of economic sovereignty.
Thus, the national theme selected is “ Local Consumption as a Driver of Regional Integration and Economic Sovereignty: Challenges and Opportunities .” At the level of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the theme focuses on “ Local Consumption: A Driver of Regional Integration and Economic Sovereignty for WAEMU in the Face of Changes in Global Trade .”
Throughout the month, the authorities intend to highlight the country’s potential in the agri-food, arts, crafts, textile, and cosmetics sectors, as well as in services and innovation.
“Through this strategy, the government aims to increase production, improve the competitiveness of local goods and services, raise consumer awareness, stimulate domestic demand, strengthen the capacities of stakeholders, reduce imports, and increase exports of finished and semi-finished products, in order to reduce the trade deficit , ” said Babanam Patoki, Minister of Economy and Strategic Planning.
In this context, the 2026 edition will also serve as a forum to discuss promising value chains and examine issues related to production, processing, transportation, and distribution, while ensuring compliance with quality standards. Discussions will also focus on investment needs and short-, medium-, and long-term development prospects.
Several activities are planned for this purpose, including training workshops, visits to companies and quality-focused infrastructure, thematic conferences, and sales exhibitions in Lomé and regional capitals.
Established by the WAEMU Commission, “Local Consumption Month” aims to promote local production and processing in member states. Celebrated since 2020, it takes place every year in October.
