Togo: The FSRP Seeks to Better Measure the Performance of Regional Agricultural Trade
Togo has just released the results of the first phase of SCORECARD, a regional mechanism for monitoring trade and agricultural markets, implemented as part of the West African Food System Resilience Program (FSRP).
Meeting last week (Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14) in Tsévié, some 50 representatives from government agencies, professional organizations, the private sector, and civil society reviewed the findings of the regional and national reports. The main focus was on identifying indicators that still need improvement and defining actions to enhance them in future editions.
The SCORECARD provides comparable data on the trade and agricultural performance of participating countries. The initiative also covers Ghana, Niger, Sierra Leone, and Chad, with technical support from Akademiya 2063.
A Program with Multiple Benefits
In Togo, this initiative complements the FSRP’s other interventions in value chains, research, and productive capacities. The program, funded by the World Bank to the tune of 50 billion CFA francs, had already reached more than 500,000 beneficiaries by the end of 2024, representing 85% of its final target of 600,000 people. Women accounted for 34% of the beneficiaries.
By that same date, nearly 30,000 vulnerable producers of maize, rice, soybeans, and cowpeas had received certified seeds and other inputs.
The program also operates upstream of production. Since 2023, its support has enabled the rehabilitation of the gene bank at the Togolese Institute for Agricultural Research (ITRA). The facility now features a cold storage room, freezing equipment, and a renovated drying room, all designed to ensure the safe conservation of plant genetic resources.
