Switzerland/Agriculture: the Swiss asparagus harvest season has begun
The first Swiss asparagus has been harvested this spring, according to the Union maraîchère suisse, and is currently sold mainly through direct channels.
The first Swiss asparagus crops have been harvested, thanks to spring-like temperatures, says the Swiss Vegetable Growers' Association (UMS). For the time being, these vegetables are mainly sold in farm stores and on the market.
"However, the supply is set to increase sharply over the next few weeks as temperatures rise," notes the organization in a press release.
UMS points out that for growers, the season starts well before the harvest. Fields are prepared early in the year, mounds are formed and the first steps are taken to accelerate the earliness of crops. "Mini-tunnels guaranteeing a warm microclimate and thus enabling early growth are very often used".
Last year, a total of 876 tonnes of asparagus (530 tonnes of white asparagus and 346 tonnes of green asparagus) were harvested in Switzerland, some 20 tonnes more than the previous year. Nearly 450 hectares of asparagus were cultivated in 2025, the organization points out.
