In Togo, the commune of Ogou 1 has joined the ranks of communities with a local waste management and sanitation policy. Located in the Plateaux region, this municipality officially launched the implementation of this policy last week.

This initiative is part of the "Waste Management in Togo" (GEDEC Togo) project, implemented by Expertise France. In Commune Ogou 1, it aims to promote a healthy, clean living environment in line with modern sanitation standards, through environmental actions designed to meet the challenges of urban hygiene and responsible waste management.

In concrete terms, several actions are planned to ensure effective and sustainable waste management, involving all local players. The framework covers both solid and liquid waste, with pre-collection operations planned.

In addition, integrated management mechanisms, from pre-collection to final treatment, are currently being deployed. In this context, a promotional subscription campaign for the pre-collection service has also been launched, to encourage massive household take-up.

Financed by the European Union (EU) to the tune of 4.2 million euros (around 2.7 billion FCFA), the GEDEC project has already been deployed in the communes of Zio 1, Tchaoudjo 1, Kozah 1 and Tône 1, as part of its pilot phase. It targets a population estimated at over 750,000, spread across the five beneficiary communes.
