Congo/Partnership: Wikipedia Congo and Butterfly commit to digital volunteering
The Wikipedia Congo community and the Butterfly non-governmental organization have signed a partnership agreement aimed at structuring digital volunteering while promoting Congolese heritage on an international scale.
The partnership agreement between the two organizations was formalized in Brazzaville during the pan-African celebration of Wikipedia's 25th anniversary, in person and by videoconference. " This partnership is an opportunity for the Wikimedia community to reaffirm its ambitions to promote local languages and enhance the influence of Congolese culture," explained Ryddhel co-founder Cyrille Ngoulou Batala. He also pointed out that the Wikimedia community in the country has more than 150 volunteers hard at work.
For Butterfly CEO Ronnie Saffou-Batchi, this partnership is an important step in the structuring of digital volunteering in the Congo. " Butterfly's work focuses on leadership, volunteering and civic engagement. The Wikimedia community focuses on collective memory, free knowledge and knowledge sharing ", he added.
The secretary of Wikimedia Congo, Claver Batchi, stressed that Wikimedia's mission is to bring the country up to the level of international digital platforms. " This partnership is to benefit from the mass of volunteers within Butterfly, so that they can enjoy the advantages offered by the Wikimedia Foundation," he said.
Among the volunteers involved in this initiative is Claime Batsimba, photographer and Wikimedia contributor, winner of the Wiki Loves Africa 2024 competition. " I put my talent at the service of the visual documentation of Congolese heritage", she said, expressing her pleasure at being part of this movement.
