Togo/Biometric identification: mass registration continues in Zio until February 18
Togo's national biometric identification campaign is continuing in the Zio prefecture, where the mass registration operation began on January 19. In this neighboring town of Greater Lomé, the operation will run until February 18, according to the authorities.
The registration centers in Tsévié and surrounding areas are very busy. The teams deployed have biometric kits and ensure daily coverage, with the participation of all categories of the population. Ahead of the launch, a workshop on complaints management mechanisms had been organized to reinforce transparency and confidence in the process.
Conducted by the Agence nationale d'identification (ANID), under the aegis of the Ministry of Public Service Efficiency and Digital Transformation, the operation aims to assign each resident a Unique Identification Number (NIU).
As the authorities remind us, it's not just a matter of issuing a card and a number. The NIU should, in time, give access to various identity-related services, including numerous public and social services, such as health, social security and financial services.
The campaign will also enable the creation of a centralized national database, designed to improve public policy planning and service governance.
The national campaign is part of the WURI-Togo project, financed to the tune of $72 million by the World Bank. The project comes at a time when less than 15% of Togolese have an official identity card.
