France/Millau and Plopeni celebrate 10 years of twinning: a story of Franco-Romanian friendship
On Monday November 17, Millau welcomed a Romanian delegation led by Dragos Nita, Mayor of Plopeni, to celebrate 10 years of official twinning between the two towns.
Between Romanian choirs, humanitarian actions and cultural projects, the Millau-Plopeni twinning has transformed an encounter into a collective history. It all began in June 2001, when members of the Millau-Amitié-Roumanie association met the mayor of Plopeni.
From then on, the initiatives multiplied: donations of school furniture, welcoming farmers, teachers and heads of specialized establishments. In 2004, Millau received its first official delegation from Plopeni, including the then vice-mayor Dragos Nita. The latter, now mayor, returned to Millau on July 14, 2010 for the commemoration of the French national holiday, marking a turning point in relations between the two towns.
Cultural exchanges have intensified: in 2012, a Romanian choir was welcomed to Millau; in 2013, a folklore group from Prahova visited the region, followed by a trip to Romania by the Millau brass band L'Écho des Avens. On April 2, 2015, the official twinning agreement was signed in Plopeni, in the presence of a delegation from Millau. A few months later, on April 13, 2016, the signing was celebrated in Millau, with the participation of a group of choristers from the Târgoviște region. Since then, exchanges have gone from strength to strength.
