France/ Quimperlé. The twinning garage sale returns on Sunday
Florence Le Berre, co-president of Quimperlé Geilenkirchen.
What will the garage sale be like?
It will take place in the parking lot of the Leclerc center, from 9 am to 5:30 pm. Last year, we couldn't find a date to hold it, but in 2023, we sold out 200 spaces. This year, we're already up to 250 places reserved, and the weather forecast is for an exceptional edition.
Admission will be €1 (from age 12). Exhibitors come from far and wide, and we receive new requests every day.
What is the history of this twinning?
It began in 1966, and has enabled us to forge strong links with this German town, bringing its inhabitants closer together and establishing a real bond of friendship between them. Many Quimperlois and local associations have travelled to Germany through this twinning arrangement.
In May 1982, the Galouperien ran a 926 km relay race to Geilenkirchen. It's a great story that we're determined to keep alive.
In the beginning, it was an opportunity for people to travel. Today, it's more complicated to maintain a twinning because people travel much more easily than they used to.
What will the money raised be used for?
In 2026, we'll be celebrating 60 years of twinning. This will take place in two stages: in Germany next year, and in France in 2027. The money raised at the garage sale will be used, among other things, to welcome our German friends, but also to part-finance the trip to Germany the following year.
Over the years, we've become one big, beautiful family. In addition to admission and pitches, we're offering a galette-sausage meal and a refreshment stand. This will also be an opportunity to share a convivial moment.
