Delivery of green bins for food and organic waste collection to some 120,000 households in Windsor-Essex begins this July. Collection is scheduled to begin in the fall, according to the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA).

According to Gary McNamara, Mayor of Tecumseh and President of the EWSWA, Windsor-Essex is one of the last regions of its size in Ontario to implement a food and organic waste management program.

We take advice from consultants who have worked with other [municipal] jurisdictions. We're applying it here in Windsor-Essex," says McNamara.

Green bins will be delivered to homes in Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh and Windsor starting July 21.

Distribution will continue in August and September.

Residents are asked to place organic food waste, such as fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy products and paper products containing food residues.

They can also dispose of dryer lint, hair and dead houseplants.

Green bin collection begins in the third week of October.

Directions to follow

According to EWSWA, the lid of each bin will feature a welcome sticker that residents should read before depositing their bin.

It asks each recipient to enter their address in the space provided, as each green bin is scanned and linked to their address as part of the Repair & Request program, which tracks issues relating to repairs, warranties and bin requests for new homes.

Recycling will take place in Leamington

Heather Taylor is EWSWA's waste diversion specialist.

She explains that all Windsor's food and organic waste will be transported to their transfer station, before being taken to Leamington for processing on a daily basis.

Food and organic waste will be transported along the highway to Seacliffe Energy, located in Leamington," explains Heather Taylor.

EWSWA encourages residents to download the Recycle Coach app and activate notifications for the green bin program, to receive delivery times and be informed of their new collection schedule.

The municipalities of Amherstburg, Kingsville and Leamington will receive their green bins in fall 2026, as collection will begin later next year.
