France/Closing seminar of the twinning on veterinary supervision of animal health in Tunisia
On July 10 in Tunis, around a hundred people attended the closing seminar of the twinning project "Strengthening veterinary supervision of animal health in Tunisia", in the presence of the SER of Tunis and the regional agricultural advisor.
This 3-year institutional cooperation project had a budget of €1.5 million, financed by the European Union and implemented by France (leader) and Italy. Tunisian authorities and French and Italian diplomatic representatives hailed the project as a success, bringing the Tunisian health system into line with the most demanding international standards in a "One Health" approach. This project, whose objectives have been successfully achieved, makes a significant contribution to strengthening animal health, public health and food sovereignty in Tunisia.
Twinning achievements include drafting of legislative and regulatory texts (revision of the "livestock" law 2005-95, 4 deces5 decrees drafted or revised), production of a National Animal Health Strategya development strategy for the Direction Générale des Services Vétérinaires, a strategic communications plan, governance documents for the reorganization of the DGSV, and communication campaigns to prevent animal diseases. 62 expert missions carried out, representing 517 man-days, 5 study visits, 2 training courses.
The completion of this twinning marks the start of a new impetus for public policy on animal health in Tunisia, now focused on better organization of livestock farming to improve health and well-being.The new policy will focus on improving the organization of livestock farming to enhance animal health and welfare, strengthening health policies to prevent animal diseases, and taking greater account of animal welfare.
