France/ The town of Flers is considering a form of cooperation with Posof in Turkey
At the last Flers town council meeting, Yvette Lerichomme, deputy town councillor for twinning and international cooperation, and Yves Goasdoué, mayor of Flers, discussed a possible link with Posof, a town in Turkey on the border with Georgia.
The town of Flers has received an official invitation from the mayor of Posof, a town in Turkey on the border with Georgia, for a Flers delegation to visit. At the last town council meeting, the possibility of forging a partnership with Posof was raised.
"Our French compatriots from Turkey are originally from Posof".
The municipality is looking into possible links with Posof. " À Flers, the significant presence of a population originating from Posof, in eastern Turkey on the Georgian border, justifies the study of new perspectives. This population of Turkish origin is heavily involved in Flers' public, associative and economic life. We need to explore a lasting rapprochement, either in the form of a twinning arrangement, or a partnership, which could take a number of different forms. We'll only be able to judge when we go and see for ourselves ," says Yvette Lerichomme, deputy minister for twinning and international cooperation.
Yves Goasdoué agrees: "I'm always very wary of twinning, because you can't be twinned with the whole world. I spoke to the mayor of Posof on videotape, and I clearly saw the desire that motivates him. Many of our French compatriots from Turkey come from Posof. It's a smaller town than ours, so I have no problem with that. However, this is an exploratory approach.
A delegation is then expected to visit the site. Opposition councillor Tâm Nguyen asked the town councillor " about the estimated cost of the trip. " The lowest possible ", replies Yves Goasdoué, before adding: " I pay almost all my own entertainment and catering expenses. I'm in no doubt about that.
