Canada, France

Sorel-Tracy's municipal council met last Monday in a special session to, among other things, adopt the 2025 budget. Other items on the agenda also caught our attention.

Twinning between the City of Sorel-Tracy and the City of Niort

The Board approved the twinning of the Ville de Sorel-Tracy with the Ville de Niort in France. According to the resolution adopted, the Ville de Sorel-Tracy and the Ville de Niort share common interests and wish to strengthen their ties of friendship. Twinning between the two cities will contribute to mutual development and intercultural understanding.

A twinning committee will be formed to organize and oversee the partnership, activities and exchanges between the two cities.

Niort is a commune in central-western France, capital of the Deux-Sèvres department, and, with a population of over 59,000, is the "central city" of an agglomeration community of around 121,000.

Street names in the new l'Archipel de Tracy development

At the suggestion of the Heritage Committee, 4 new streets have been named in the l'Archipel housing development in the Tracy sector.

Councillor Martin Lajeunesse mentioned this during his speech at the end of the meeting.

One of these streets will bear the name of Louise-Valois-Liessens, a committed Soreloise musician and writer. She was a founding member of the Société historique Pierre-de-Saurel, of which she was president from 1977 to 1982.

Another street will be named in honor of a woman. Denise-D'Aragon was a sculptor and painter who was very active in the region. She was also known as the wife of architect Jacques Racicot.

Finally, two other streets will be named in memory of two former Tracy mayors. Arthur-Edmond-Pontbriand and Émile-Parent, who respectively headed the former City of Tracy from 1968 to 1974 and from 1987 to 2000.

"In the case of Mr. Edmond-Pontbriand, it was under his reign that the new filtration plant and the Cégep de Sorel-Tracy were built. As for Mr. Parent, he was renowned for, among other things, putting the city of Tracy's finances in order. He was also a fervent advocate of the merger between the cities of Tracy and Sorel. After his political retirement, he continued to volunteer for numerous organizations," explained Mr. Lajeunesse.
