Vietnam faces the challenge of online child safety
In the age of digital technology, joining forces to create a safe cyberspace for children is not just a concern for Vietnam, but for the whole world.
According to Trân Van Anh, Deputy Director of the Management and Sustainable Development Institute (MSD), the results of a survey on children's level of participation in cyberspace show that 83% of children use phones, 76% of them smartphones.
As for the purposes for which they use their networked phones, 86% of children say they use them for entertainment purposes (watching films, taking photos, listening to music, playing games, etc.).
Some 75.3% use the Internet to study, 66.5% to search for information and 53.7% to socialize.
According to Nguyên Duc Tuân, Director of the Viet Nam Cybersecurity Emergency Response Teams/Coordination Center (VNCERT/CC), the dangers facing young Internet users are manifold.
From inappropriate content to online harassment, addiction and involvement in illegal activities, the threats are many and varied.
To ensure optimum protection for children in cyberspace, Dinh Thi Nhu Hoa, Head of VNCERT's Information Security Inspection Office, proposes a combination of five levers: a solid legal framework, digitally-savvy citizens, cutting-edge technologies, better knowledge of the law and enhanced international cooperation.
Nguyên Thanh Hung, President of the Vietnam Information Security Association (VNISA), emphasized that the association was at the forefront of online child protection, encouraging its members to invest in the research and development of innovative solutions.
In addition, VNISA is currently developing a set of quality standards designed to guarantee the effectiveness of digital security products and services aimed at the very young.
