Pupils in the commune of Diendé, in the department of Sédhiou, received literary works on Tuesday to mark World Book and Copyright Day.

World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the pleasure of books and reading, explained the director of the Sedhiou Cultural Center, Youssouf Diatta, at the ceremony held at the Diendé college.

"Books represent the most beautiful invention for sharing ideas, and are a powerful tool for fighting poverty and building lasting peace," he declared.

According to Mr. Diatta, "every year, on April 23, events take place in the region to recognize the breadth of books, a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures".

He stressed the importance of equipping students, especially exam candidates, with works on the syllabus to enrich their general culture. "It's crucial to provide students with books to maintain a balance between reading and the new applications of the internet", he explained.

According to Edith Mangama, Principal of Diendé high school, this symbolic date was chosen to pay tribute to several great authors as champions of books and defenders of creativity, creativity and the arts.of creativity, diversity and equal access to knowledge.

She took the opportunity to plead with the relevant authorities for the construction of a library and an endowment of works enabling students to familiarize themselves with books.

"The college has a library problem, as well as a problem with the works on the syllabus. We invite the relevant authorities to come to our aid", said the teacher, inviting us to "celebrate together the power of words and the importance of reading in our lives".

Mor Dior Ndiaye, deputy sub-prefect of Diendé, who came to preside over the ceremony, invited the authors to continue producing works and to meet their readers. "Authors must continue to work harder for the evolution of works over time to reflect the diversity and creativity of contemporary literature," he said.

He insisted on the involvement of local authorities in setting up libraries or reading corners in communal establishments.

"Local elected officials must get involved in promoting reading among learners by creating libraries in their communes to facilitate access to books," pleaded Mr. Ndiaye.
