SENEGAL- ENVIRONMENT / Foundiougne: young people and women learn about green entrepreneurship in the Saloum Delta

Beneficiaries of the "Green jobs project for women and young people in the Saloum Delta" were made aware of the need to promote green entrepreneurship in order to meet the challenges of climate change.

On Tuesday, this ILO-led project was the focus of a forum of young people and women aged between 18 and 35 from the Foundiougne department, involved in beekeeping and mollusc farming in the mangrove swamps of the Saloum Delta.

"We met with the project beneficiaries to raise their awareness of all the activities carried out around the mangrove. The aim is to ultimately improve the beekeeping and mollusc farming value chains," explained project manager Eli Maxime Sogbossi.

This project, set up thanks to the International Labour Organization (ILO), targets 2,000 beneficiaries. It will cost 4 million euros, or 2.623 billion CFA francs, over a three-year period.

According to the project manager, the aim is to bring about systemic change by supporting the creation of economic and ecological jobs in mangrove ecosystems.

In this way, the beneficiaries will have access to social protection benefits that will reduce the risks they face, said Eli Maxime Sogbossi.

The sub-prefect of Toubacouta, Amath Saiko Ly, for his part, hailed the positive impact of the green employment project, which will strengthen climate resilience within the Saloum delta ecosystem.

"The project will improve the quality of life of women and young beneficiaries by offering them stable and sustainable economic opportunities. Beyond that, it will also strengthen climate resilience within the highly threatened ecosystem," he said.
