The Town of Amos took advantage of Earth Day on Monday to launch its first sustainable development policy. The document is the fruit of an internal reflection process with the firm Nature-Action Québec, as well as a citizen consultation.

The new policy was adopted by the municipal council on April 15. It establishes orientations in four major sectors: the environment, social and community issues, the economy and governance. It comprises 21 fields of action.

With everything that's coming up in terms of energy conservation, climate plans and land protection, we wanted the Town of Amos to be ahead of the curve. Our goal is to ensure that our decisions are good for the future. We sometimes tend to make very quick decisions on the ground, but we want to ask ourselves what impact they will have in the future," explains Amos mayor Sébastien D'Astous.

The sustainable development policy must guide the Town of Amos in all its decisions.

We want all our action plans that stem from our various policies to be colored by our sustainable development policy. We really want every department to think about how we can do things better and be eco-responsible.

The sustainable development policy will also be accompanied by a possible action plan for the environment and ecological transition.

This could include actions to promote the circular economy. We want to reduce supply chains to a minimum. We want to ensure food security for the most vulnerable. We want equity and social inclusion. In short, there are some major themes here. As we apply it, people will understand that it will really color all our policies at the city," says Mayor D'Astous.
