Vietnam/Eight coastal towns receive support to modernize forestry sector

More than 4,000 ha of coastal forests continue to be maintained and restored to ensure that the plants grow well and are resilient, which is one of the important objectives of the World Bank (WB) funded project entitled "Forest Sector Modernization and Coastal Resilience Enhancement" (FMCR).

The project will run until 2026 in eight coastal provinces and cities: Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Nghê An, Hà Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thiên Huê, said Pham Hông Vich, Deputy Head of the Forestry Projects Management Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The project will contribute directly to the objectives of the Sustainable Forestry Development Program for the period 2021-2025, said Pham Hông Vich.

It will also make a significant contribution to improving the resilience of vulnerable areas along around 900 km of coastline in eight coastal provinces, reducing degradation, erosion and the risk of natural disasters.

Positive effects will also include increased carbon accumulation and sequestration through the project's forest planting and protection activities, contributing to the country's potential to sell carbon credits.

The annual carbon storage capacity of the forests corresponding to the amount of carbon credits will increase over time, notably the carbon storage capacity of mangrove forests in the project areas can be 5 to 10 times greater than that of terrestrial forests depending on the region, making a significant contribution to the national commitment to "zero net emissions" by 2050, said Pham Hông Vich.

The first phase of the project involved new plantations and the restoration of coastal forests covering 4,040 ha.

Over 6,500 households benefit directly and a further 12,000 indirectly from the project's activities. The percentage of women participating in and benefiting from the project is around 40%.
