The Municipality of Morin-Heights adopted a new environmental and transition policy at the July council meeting.

The Municipality had first consulted the population as a whole to identify the priorities of this new policy. Last May, those who wished to be more actively involved in the implementation of this policy identified themselves to the Environmental Advisory Committee ( EAC). They were then contacted in order to define their main areas of interest.

5 priority sectors

Following meetings with citizens and discussions, the committee identified five priority environmental sectors. These are the preservation of wetlands and aquatic environments, the reduction of pollution and the maintenance of an optimal quality of life. Respect for biodiversity and the protection of fragile environments, as well as the protection of the forest cover were also identified.

Thus, for each sector, the CCE has identified objectives to be reached with the actions necessary to achieve them. It is a tool to guide the municipal council, its administration and citizens in the management of their activities. These activities must be carried out in a responsible manner and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The policy will affect the economic, social and environmental aspects of the municipality.

"Whether it is the protection of the forest cover, the preservation of wetlands and aquatic environments, the respect of biodiversity and the protection of fragile environments, the reduction of pollution or the maintenance of an optimal quality of life, we are proud of this policy. [It reflects the various environmental priority sectors and the action plan to be undertaken in order to be eco-responsible as a citizen and as a municipality," said Mayor Tim Watchorn.

Ensuring follow-up

The policy will be reviewed every five years "to ensure that it is responsive to changing needs and realities," the policy states. Each year, the committee will develop action plans to select priority objectives and actions to address.

In August, these citizens will be invited to a meeting to discuss the next phases of the EAC's work. They will be able to establish sub-working groups and determine the 2022-2024 action plan.
