The Tahoua Regional Directorate of Livestock of Tahoua launched on Thursday, a vaccination campaign for livestock against diseases such as bovine pleuropneumonia (BPP), peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and camel pasteurellosis. Some 100 teams of vaccinators were deployed throughout the region to immunize a total of 2.7 million head of cattle, 4.9 million small ruminants and 241,218 camels against the above-mentioned epizootics.

This vaccination campaign, which will last more than three months, will ensure that the livestock are protected from epizootic diseases," said Idrissa Allassan, Regional Director of Livestock.

With an estimated livestock population of more than 70 million head, livestock is one of the pillars of the national economy along with agriculture. The sector generates 15% of the national GDP (gross domestic product) and alone absorbs about 87% of the working population's total or partial working time, according to data from the Ministry of Livestock.

It should be noted that the Tahoua region, for its part, has 21% of the country's livestock.
