Togo/Drinking Water: 305 wells completed in the Plateaux region thanks to Sino-Togolese cooperation

In Togo, the government’s goal of achieving universal access to safe drinking water by 2030 has taken a new step forward with the commissioning of 305 boreholes equipped with hand-pump systems in the Plateaux region. These boreholes, constructed as part of the “Village Water Supply Project for 300 Boreholes,” with Chinese funding, were handed over to the beneficiaries on Friday, September 18, 2026, in a symbolic ceremony held in Abalo Copé, in the Wahala canton of Haho Prefecture.

The handover ceremony was held in the presence of Séna Alipui, Deputy Minister for Water and Sanitation, and Wang Min, China’s ambassador to Togo.

Spread across 285 villages in the 12 prefectures of the Plateaux Region, the projects cover all 32 municipalities in the region and are expected to benefit more than 70,000 people. The project represents an investment of 4.387 billion CFA francs and is one of the achievements of cooperation between Togo and the People’s Republic of China in the water sector.

Beyond the infrastructure itself, the goal is to bring rural communities closer to drinking water sources and reduce the challenges associated with their water supply. In the beneficiary communities, these new facilities are expected to help reduce the distances people must travel to access water, while improving households’ hygiene and living conditions.

Supporting the Goal of Universal Coverage

The construction of these wells is part of the Togolese authorities’ ambition to accelerate investments in the water sector and achieve universal access to safe drinking water by 2030.

For Minister Séna Alipui, access to safe drinking water is a key component of the government’s development policy. “A well that is properly constructed but poorly maintained cannot produce the expected results over the long term, ” he noted, calling on the beneficiary communities to ensure the proper management of the infrastructure.

On the Chinese side, Ambassador Wang Min praised the completion of the project, noting that improving access to safe drinking water in rural areas contributes to the well-being of the population and to rural development. For the governor of the Plateaux region, General Dadja Maganawé, the completion of these projects above all illustrates the concrete translation of public policies into people’s daily lives.

With these 305 boreholes, Togo is strengthening its system for providing access to drinking water in rural areas, while continuing to make the necessary investments to reduce regional disparities and move toward its goal of universal coverage by 2030.
