Benin/Large-scale meat production and processing: Kandi welcomes an ultra-modern slaughterhouse, the only one of its kind in West Africa.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Mr Gaston Cossi DOSSOUHOUI, officially inaugurated the modern abattoir in Kandi-Fô (Alibori department) on Thursday February 19, 2026. This large-scale infrastructure, the only one of its kind in the West African sub-region, positions Benin as the only country to have obtained approval to set up such an integrated facility.

An integrated farm with high capacity

The slaughterhouse is part of the HOUEZREWOUEKE agro-industrial complex. HOUEZREWOUEKE, an integrated farm specializing in the production and marketing of donkey meat, as well as small and large ruminants.

With an estimated annual capacity of 400,000 head, or around 500 to 1.000 head per day, the site comprises three major units:

An animal production area, dedicated to the feeding and health monitoring of animals prior to slaughter;

A modern slaughter unit, equipped with a complete chain of operations (slaughtering, dressing, decutting, packaging, labeling, preservation and storage in cold rooms);

A biogas production unit, for the production of energy and organic fertilizer, guaranteeing a sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach.

A development lever for Alibori

For Minister Gaston Cossi DOSSOUHOUI, the center will be a veritable agrégator in the Alibori department, by supporting producers and cooperatives in their livestock breeding activities. He invited executives from the Alibori Departmental Directorate of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (DDAEP) and ATDA pôle 2, as well as local authorities, to actively support the promoter to ensure the full success of the project for the benefit of the local population.

The promoter, Mr. Narcisse DEMAGNON, emphasized that the center will also support agricultural technical high schools, universities and training establishments in learning meat processing technologies, not forgetting local butchers.

The livestock production cooperatives affiliated to the center, together with the department's livestock traders, will be the main sources of supply, ensuring the sustainable operation of the infrastructure.

An infrastructure welcomed by local players

The mayor of Kandi, Madame OSSENI SAKA Zinatou, expressed her satisfaction at seeing the commune host this integrated infrastructure, which will reduce unemployment and improve the quality of life of the local population.This infrastructure will help reduce unemployment and improve the incomes of those involved in the industry.

The president of the Association Nationale des Organisations Professionnelles d'Éleveurs de Ruminants du Bénin (ANOPER), Aboubacar Alfa TIDJANI, welcomed the infrastructure, which will enable livestock breeders to slaughter their animals in optimal conditions, and make better use of their production.

The Prefect of Alibori, Hamed Bello KY-SAMAH, was equally enthusiastic.partement, where ATDA Pôle 2 specializes in livestock breeding, offers an ideal strategic setting for such a project. He pledged the prefecture's continued support for this structuring initiative.
