Belgium/Brussels brings its fountains back to life with a multi-year restoration plan
The City of Brussels has decided to launch a vast program to renovate and maintain its emblematic fountains, announced First Alderman Florence Frelinx (MR), in charge of historical heritage, on Tuesday.
The first phase of a six-year plan to be implemented over the next three years has been approved by the college of burgomasters and aldermen. It provides for the restoration of several priority sites and, in all, a dozen fountains by 2027.
In concrete terms, the first projects will begin in 2025: the Fontaine des Naïades, located at the bottom of the Rue Ravenstein staircase, will benefit from a technical overhaul, while the Fontaine du Square Marie-Louise has already undergone a water connection, leak repairs and landscaping maintenance. Others to follow in this first phase include the Fontaine de la Bourse and the Fontaine Continental, the Fontaine Maelbeek, the Fontaine Auguste Orts, the Anspach basins and the Fontaine du Vieux Marché aux Grains.
Beyond the technical restoration, the project reflects a broader vision of the place of heritage in the capital," commented the alderwoman in a press release.According to the First Alderman, these interventions will contribute to enhancing the capital's tourist appeal, while improving the quality of life and conviviality of public spaces. "With this six-year plan, which I wanted to be realistic and measured, I want to give them back their rightful place in the city and reveal, fountain after fountain, the cultural and historical wealth they embody", she concluded.
