"Social awareness of the rights of people with disabilities in Morocco: Trends and shared visions" was the theme of a regional symposium organized on Tuesday in Oujda, on the initiative of the Coordination régionale de l'Entraide nationale de l'Oriental. Speakers at the symposium, organized under the aegis of the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration and the Family, in partnership with the Mohammed Premier University (UMP) in Oujda and the Oriental Regional Delegation for Islamic Affairs, highlighted the importance of the achievements made by Morocco at various levels in favor of people with disabilities.

In his speech, Hamid Khazri, regional coordinator of Entraide Nationale, stressed that Morocco had made significant progress in protecting the rights of people with disabilities.re protection of the rights of people with disabilities, both through the ratification of relevant international conventions and the enshrinement in the 2011 Constitution of the principle of non-discrimination, as well as the promulgation of framework law no. 97.13 on the protection and promotion of the rights of people with disabilities.

The regional head pointed out that this symposium is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the culture of human rights, particularly with regard to people with disabilities, by promoting a culture of recognition and dignity, enshrining the principles of inclusion and participation, and building positive social perceptions.

For his part, Mohamed Amarti, Chairman of the Oriental Regional Human Rights Commission (CRDH), told MAP that the Commission's participation in the symposium was part of its commitment to the promotion of human rights in the region.In a statement to MAP, Mohamed Amarti said that the Commission's participation in the symposium was part of the National Council for Human Rights' (CNDH) commitment to the national drive to protect the rights of people with disabilities, and to combat all forms of discrimination and exclusion affecting them.

He went on to say that people with disabilities enjoy rights recognized at world level by international agreements, and at national level by the Constitution and laws in force, noting that these rights have been put forward in public policies and national plans aimed at improving the situation of this category.

He added that the issue of disability is becoming increasingly important from a variety of angles (legal, social and economic), stressing that the CRDH continues to carry out its mission to support these changes, through awareness-raising, monitoring and participation in dedicated regional events.

For his part, Hicham Kazzout, lecturer and researcher in media and communication at the UMP, felt that the media approach is an essential factor in reinforcing the media discourse aimed at encouraging positive representations that guarantee the full participation of women in society.This is achieved by deconstructing stereotypes and presenting successful models that highlight the considerable potential of this category.
