Senegal/Ziguinchor: some twenty orthoprosthetic technicians trained in rehabilitation prosthesis manufacturing techniques

Some twenty orthoprosthetic technicians have been trained in techniques for making prostheses for the physical rehabilitation of landmine victims in Ziguinchor.

The training, which took place at the Boutoute Physical Rehabilitation Center, was initiated by the Senegalese Association of Mine Victims (ISAD-ASVM), in partnership with the Swiss organization Swiss Ability.

The beneficiaries received their parchment in the presence of the Regional Director of Health, Dr Youssoupha Tine, the Director of Social Action, Seydou Nourou Thiam and representatives of ISAD-ASVM and the Swiss organization Swiss Ability, as well as local residents.

According to Sarany Diatta, President of ISAD-ASVM, "the aim of this training was to strengthen local expertise in order to provide amputees with modern, light, easy-to-use medical devices.s with modern, lightweight, durable and low-cost medical devices, while reducing their dependence on imported equipment".

"This training enabled us to introduce advanced techniques adapted to local realities", added Mr. Diatta.

He noted that participants had come from different regions of Senegal, as well as Guinea-Bissau, reflecting the sub-regional scope of the initiative.

Sarany Diatta saw the training as a decisive step towards improving the living conditions of landmine victims.

Dr. Youssoupha Tine, Regional Director of Health, came to preside over the graduation ceremony. the importance of this initiative, which he said was "in line with national health priorities".

For Dr. Tine, "the introduction of monorim technology represents a breakthrough that will propel the region to the forefront of the orthopedic field, while significantly reducing manufacturing costs".

Seydou Nourou Thiam, Regional Director of Social Action for Ziguinchor, expressed his deep gratitude to the trainees for their commitment and willingness to learn.

He stressed that the certificates awarded symbolize more than just technical skills. They represent a responsibility towards vulnerable people", he said.

The Swiss Ability organization donated a "utility vehicle to the center, facilitating the deployment of services in rural areas that are difficult to access".

For Sarany Diatta, this logistical means is essential to reach the most isolated patients, who are often unable to visit health centers due to their disability.

"The vehicle donated to the Boutoute center embodies a turning point in the community-based approach to rehabilitation, enabling more equitable access to care," hailed the Director of Social Action, Seydou Nourou Thiam.
