Belgium/Mentor and job seeker: A duo to get out of unemployment
Last April, Actiris, the Brussels employment agency, announced its intention to help 4,400 jobseekers escape unemployment by 2028, thanks to mentoring. This coaching formula enables jobseekers to benefit from the skills of an expert to help them (re)find their way back to work. According to Actiris, this voluntary support is effective in 65% of cases. How does it work? Visit Team4Job, one of the 4 partners selected by the Brussels agency.
When he first entered the premises of ASBL Team4job, Driss Dali doubted his ability to find a new job. With a bachelor's degree in human relations, the young man had found himself unemployed following the closure of the start-up that employed him. A painful professional experience that left him feeling illegitimate in his job. It was finally an Actiris advisor who pointed him in the direction of mentoring, an individualized coaching formula he'd never heard of before. At Team4job, he met Amandine Denis de Ruelle, his future mentor. With her, he regained confidence in his abilities and targeted the job offers that suited him, eventually landing a new position: "Usually, when you're looking for a job, you're alone in front of a computer. Here, she would send me little encouraging text messages, which changed everything!
"I've worked with 20-year-old jobseekers and others who were nearly 60".
Amandine worked for over 20 years as a human resources manager in several international groups. "I accompanied employees within companies, but I was also very keen to do so outside my job. I thought I could be useful to jobseekers, helping them to orientate their search". So, for the past 10 years, she has been working with people in fields as varied as marketing, agricultural machinery and digital creation. People of all ages, with whom she reworks CVs, conducts interview simulations or works on self-confidence to help them project themselves or join the world of work. She usually spends an hour every 15 days at lunchtime, for a period of 6 months. And it works! Géraldine Dantin, co-founder of the ASBL Team4job, even claims a 68% return to employment after a mentoring experience.
Géraldine Dantin is co-founder and CEO of Team4Job. For her, "many jobseekers in Brussels lack a 'network' or knowledge of certain sectors of the business world. They may also lack specific job-seeking skills and self-confidence. And these difficulties are even more acute for people who are furthest from the job market, young people, the long-term unemployed or people coming off long periods of sick leave". These people often need intensive, individualized support. Team4Jopb and Actiris' other partners (Backstage. Network, Duo for a JOB and MentorYou) offer to put them in touch with a mentor who is willing to put his or her network or skills at the mentee's service, free of charge", explains Géraldine Dantin. "These meetings take place in the mentor's company, to bring the job seeker closer to the business world". Team4Job alone has a network of 1,000 mentors, spread across 600 companies in 40 sectors. One regret:"It remains a challenge to convince jobseekers to join us. Many are unaware of the existence of this support, while others have lost confidence and no longer believe in it". And yet, mentoring is one of the most effective ways of finding a job.
