Belgium

Who doesn't have a Tupperware food box tucked away in their kitchen cupboard? Along with other investors, Hutois Geoffroy Destexhe has just bought Tupperware France, with an exclusive agreement to distribute the brand's products in five countries, including Belgium.

The deal was made possible by the fact that the American multinational, which was in dire financial straits, recently decided to abandon the European market after more than 60 years of presence on the old continent.

For Geoffroy Destexhe, this is not a leap into the unknown, as he was previously Tupperware's General Manager for Belgium and France."I think the image of Tupperware is a bit truncated because many people still think it's just a plastic box company. The product range has evolved a lot, but in recent years we haven't communicated enough about our innovations. That's what we're going to do better in the future."

Home sales to pick up

This relaunch of activities is certainly a source of delight for the many home salespeople who used to run Tupperware demonstrations, or "culinary workshops" as they are now called. "These people had been on stand-by since the beginning of January", regrets Geoffroy Destexhe. "Those who were doing these home sales as a sideline sometimes earned several hundred euros a month, which still represents a good salary supplement. Others had made it their main activity, and often took years to develop a network which they will now be able to reactivate. There are 2,500 Tupperware consultants in Belgium, and between 250 and 400 in the province of Liège.
