The major construction project, which will enable the City of Rivière-du-Loup to relocate two of its departments to new premises, will get underway in the coming weeks on boulevard de l'Hôtel-de-Ville.

The project, valued at $7,668,985, will involve demolishing an old building adjacent to City Hall and constructing a new two-storey building.

The Town Clerk's Office, the Legal Department and the Human Potential Department will be able to move into their new premises in autumn 2026. Until then, they will remain in premises leased by the City on the2nd floor of the Canada Post building.

Having owned the building in question for several years, the municipal administration had no choice but to opt for demolition and reconstruction after major mold problems were discovered in the current building.

According to Rivière-du-Loup mayor Mario Bastille, demolition work is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Once completed, construction work is scheduled to start next autumn, and take almost a year to complete.

The mayor points out that the subsidy offered to the town was recently increased by Quebec, as part of the building will be made of wood. This means that Rivière-du-Loup will have to foot just over 25% of the bill.

The new building will include some twenty offices, with open-plan workspaces. A small public square will also be created between the new building and Rivière-du-Loup town hall. According to Mario Bastille, Quebec's cities and MRCs must increasingly offer services to their citizens.

We're looking to the future with the construction of this building. We want to meet the needs of our employees and citizens for the next 50 years.

Over the next few weeks, the plans will be completed. The project will also be presented to the general public at a municipal council meeting. The redevelopment of the administrative offices was part of the city's three-year capital plan.
