On Monday in Fez, the National Data Protection Supervisory Commission (CNDP) and the Turkish Data Protection Authority (KVKK) signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their cooperation in this area.

The document, signed by CNDP President Omar Seghrouchni and KVKK President Faruk Bilir, aims to federate the efforts of the two bodies to promote the protection of personal data.

In a statement to MAP, the Chairman of the CNDP emphasized the importance of this memorandum of understanding between the two bodies, given that Turkey is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, while Morocco is positioned between Europe and Africa.

"We have the same concerns and the same orientations, and we hope to make progress in this field", he said.

He pointed out that the signing of this agreement comes on the sidelines of the important meeting of the network of bodies in charge of personal data protection in the Islamic world, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday in Fez.

Several bodies will be present at this meeting, which follows on from last year's meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, added Mr. Seghrouchni. Seghrouchni added that several African bodies would be taking part in the meeting, in addition to Turkey and experts representing other countries.

Created under the February 2009 law on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data, the Commission Nationale de Contrôle de la Protection des Données à caractère Personnel is responsible for verifying that the processing of personal data is lawful and legal, and that it does not infringe privacy or fundamental human rights and freedoms.
