Togo: FCFA 19 billion for water supply by 2025
In 2025, Togo plans to pursue its ambition of guaranteeing universal access to drinking water by 2030. The budget earmarked for this objective amounts to 19 billion FCFA, according to the finance law for the current financial year.
This represents a 5% increase on the previous year's budget of 18 billion FCFA. This allocation represents 86% of the total resources allocated to the Ministry of Water and Village Hydraulics this year, 2025.
With these resources, several actions will be carried out in connection with the national drinking water supply plan. Launched in February 2021, this plan encompasses a series of structuring projects designed to sustainably improve access to drinking water throughout the country.
Among the flagship initiatives is the third phase of the Projet d'amélioration des conditions sanitaires en milieux scolaire et rural des régions de la Kara et des Savanes (PASSCO3). This program calls for the construction of 850 boreholes equipped with human-powered pumps, with the aim of providing drinking water to over 200,000 people in rural areas by the end of 2025.
At the same time, efforts will be devoted to improving water supply in and around Lomé. The work planned consists of equipping and connecting a borehole with a capacity of 40 cubic meters per hour located in Apédokoe (south-west of Greater Lomé).and the construction of a new 1,300-cubic-meter water tower in Sagbado (commune Golfe 7, southwest of Grand-Lomé).
The Togo Urban Water Security Project (PaSH-MUT), launched in October 2023, is also part of this dynamic. This program aims to install six autonomous drinking water supply systems in the outlying areas of Lomé, to meet growing needs in urban areas.
These initiatives are announced at a time when Togo is aiming to achieve 85% national drinking water coverage by the end of 2025, and 100% by 2030. According to statistics published by the Ministry of Water and Village Hydraulics in July 2024, the drinking water coverage rate rose from 47.66% in 2014 to 69% in 2023.
