Belgium/Bruxelles Propreté has started collecting around 100 tonnes of Christmas trees
On Monday, teams from Bruxelles Propreté began collecting Christmas trees for composting via the green waste collection scheme. The collection of some 100 tonnes of coniferous trees, according to the Brussels public operator's estimate, will take place over the next four weeks. Residents are invited to take out their end-of-life trees on green waste collection days only, removing the pot and decorations and ensuring that they do not obstruct the passage of local residents.
A large proportion of the trees collected will be sent to the Regional Agency's composting center. After shredding, they will be mixed with other garden waste to reduce the acidity of the conifers. They will be sheltered from the air and wind for two weeks before undergoing the actual composting process for several months. At the end of the decomposition process, all that remains is organic matter, which can be used to improve poor soils.
