An operation launched by Romandie ski de fond (RSF) will make access to cross-country ski trails free of charge next Thursday throughout French-speaking Switzerland. Novices will be able to take part in introductory courses.

Access to cross-country ski trails will be free throughout French-speaking Switzerland next Thursday. The operation launched by Romandie ski de fond (RSF) aims to promote this sport. Initiations will be offered to beginners.

On January 2, snow permitting, the Nordic centers in French-speaking Switzerland will be showcasing their activities. Nordic enthusiasts will be able to start the New Year on the right foot, writes RSF in a press release.

La Vue des Alpes (NE), for example, is offering a free introduction to cross-country skiing in the morning. "This will also be an opportunity to learn about grooming equipment and markers," explains Jérémie Huguenin, head of the center. Snacks and drinks will be available.

Biathlon

At the Crêt-les Paccots (FR) Nordic center, the ski-club is also organizing an introductory day. While access to the pistes is free, the organizers are charging 10 francs for equipment hire and the course. Depending on snow conditions, the activity will take place either at Les Crêts or Les Paccots, warns manager François Currat. Registration is highly recommended.

Les Mosses (VD) has announced a "fairly substantial organization" to welcome cross-country skiers that day. Center manager Guy-John Pasche points out that they will be able to take advantage of an introduction to biathlon with experienced instructors. There will also be a competition to win cross-country skiing lessons. Mulled wine, tea and cookies will be provided.

In Crans-Montana (VS), enthusiasts will be able to try their hand at biathlon, using laser rifles, under the responsibility of the resort's cross-country ski school, says Jean-Yves Rey, in charge of organization.

1500 km of trails

Nordic skiers and skateboarders who put on their lats on Thursday will also have the opportunity to take part in a grand prize draw with "beautiful watches" at stake, notes RSF, which recommends consulting the resort websites for more information. The umbrella organization points out that the network in French-speaking Switzerland comprises more than 1,500 kilometers of trails, and that their itineraries are now available on the SuisseMobile application.

For the past two years, the traditional free day on January 2 has been cancelled due to a lack of white gold. "We're very hopeful: it's been a long time since we've had so much snow," says RSF President Laurent Donzé.
