In Togo, the data collection phase for the fifth National Agricultural Census (RNA 5) will begin on November 30, 2024. The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture, Antoine Lekpa Gbegbeni.

This stage will be preceded by training for enumerators, scheduled for November 27-29 in their respective prefectures. These agents will be trained in the techniques and tools needed to collect information from farmers.

In the field, they will be tasked with collecting accurate, disaggregated data, essential for a rigorous assessment of current agricultural policies and projects. According to the Ministry, these data could also be used to rebase the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Previous data from RNA 4, carried out 12 years ago, highlight the central role of agriculture in the Togolese economy. The sector employs around 60% of the working population and contributes almost 40% of GDP.

This fifth census, which will be carried out over a 24-month period, aims to update these statistics and provide a solid basis for guiding public policy and investment in the agricultural sector.
