France/Eure: This small town relies on CCTV to improve security
Smile, you're being filmed - Target of numerous burglaries, the village is equipped with cameras.
Big cities aren't the only ones plagued by rising crime rates. Bézu-Saint-Éloi(Eure), population 1,700, is one of those small French villages where peace and quiet are no longer guaranteed. The mayor has therefore decided to combat this growing insecurity by investing in a video surveillance system, as reported by our colleagues atActu.fr.
Anthony Brunet, the mayor of this small village, has had to face the facts: his constituents are no longer safe, especially where their property is concerned. The village, less than an hour north of Paris, has become a prime target for burglars from the Paris region. Faced with this upsurge, the mayor has decided to put all strategic roads under surveillance.
Twelve cameras installed
A network of twelve cameras will be installed to warn, monitor and facilitate the investigative work of the police. The D14 bis and the route d'Heudicourt, frequently used by delinquents to escape after committing a crime, will soon be monitored day and night. But this project comes at a price.
The elected representatives have opted for rental. A subscription fee of 900 euros per month will be paid in full by the small commune. The mayor hopes that this solution will deter thieves and give residents back their peace of mind.
