Togo/Waste management: soon, "ambitious" municipal policies in five communes
In Togo, the technical monitoring committee of the Waste Management in Togo (GEDEC Togo) project met on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in Lomé, to review and validate communal solid and liquid waste management policies. The initiative covers five communes, namely Zio 1, Ogou 1, Tchaoudjo 1, Kozah 1 and Tône 1, and ultimately aims to improve the living environment for more than 750,000 inhabitants.
The meeting, initiated by the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Customary Chieftaincy, enabled members to deliver technical advice with a view to finalizing current policies. According to Laure Koun Bruma, GEDEC Togo project manager, the aim was to "examine communal solid and liquid waste management policies". " The technical committee will provide guidelines for the technical validation of these policies in Togo", she adds.
By the end of the year, each commune should formally adopt this local waste management policy. Starting in June 2023, the GEDEC Togo project is funded by the European Union to the tune of 4.2 million euros. " We're very pleased to see that the town councils have taken concrete and ambitious steps forward," said a member of the the European Union delegation, noting the progress made by the town halls since the launch of the initiative in 2023.
A few months earlier, in June, the initiative enabled the establishment of a communal treatment center for the sanitation of the Tchaoudjo 1 commune.
