France/ Pornic region: in this commune, roadworks are changing the lives of motorists
Roadworks have been underway for several months in Chauvé. Here's what's new for road users.
A major roadworks project is currently underway in the town of Chauvé (Loire-Atlantique), near Pornic.
The work involves the chemin du bourg and the route de Saint-Père.
While the aim is the same for both projects, the changes to traffic flow on these two roads are different.
One-way traffic and chaucidou
Since summer 2024, the chemin du bourg has been a one-way street, with one direction defined in consultation with local residents.
The route de Saint-Père will become a central carriageway with an unmarked lane (or chaucidou, for "soft traffic carriageway") for motorized vehicles, to create two lateral cycle lanes for bicycle traffic.
To comply with accessibility standards for people with reduced mobility, the sidewalks have been widened and the number of steps in the houses adjoining the street has been reduced, by raising the level of the roadway.
No more alternating parking
Another notable change is the disappearance of alternating parking. With these changes, the number of parking spaces will remain virtually unchanged, but they will be on the south side only.
The cost of upgrading these two lanes is approximately €1.1 million, of which €880,000 will be borne by the municipality.
The work, initially scheduled to take 8 months, will now be spread over 12 months. Reopening to traffic is scheduled for early December 2024.
