Canada/N.S. government publishes code of conduct for elected municipal officials
The Nova Scotia government has published a code of conduct for all elected municipal officials in the province.
The code comprises 40 guidelines divided into 14 categories covering topics ranging from gifts and benefits received to how public servants should handle confidential information.
Municipal Affairs Minister John Lohr says that a code guaranteeing elected municipal officials clear guidelines on conduct and behavior is long overdue.
Such a code was first called for by the province's municipalities and villages. It was then developed on the basis of the recommendations of a working group set up in January 2022.
The task force recommended a province-wide code, with processes for investigating complaints and imposing sanctions.
The Nova Scotia government says municipal councils and village boards will have to adopt this code of conduct by December 19.
