Guinea has secured EU funding for priority sectors essential to the well-being of the population. The aim is to support the fight against irregular immigration, waste management and access to drinking water, the creation of green jobs and the health sector.

Guinea has signed financing agreements worth 104 million euros (around $113 million) with the European Union (EU) as part of the 2024 Annual Action Plan. The announcement was made on the facebook page of the Guinean Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, on Thursday October 17. The funding will be used to strengthen the health, water and sanitation, employment and migration sectors.

According to the details, this agreement will finance a health sector support program, promoting universal health coverage, for an amount of 22 million dollars. In Guinea, according to the government, by the end of December 2014, 94 health facilities and one district hospital had been closed. The percentage of public health infrastructure in poor condition rose from 33% to 57%.

In addition to the deterioration of infrastructure, which reduces access to healthcare services for the population, funding for the sector remains insufficient. Although the government has increased its efforts, the health sector is still largely underfunded. Between 2013 and 2014, funding for health districts fell from 22% to 11%.

The SANITA+ program is also taken into account, with $50 million to improve waste management and access to drinking water. According to Expertise France, 31% of the urban population has access to drinking water in Guinea, with 40% in Conakry and 26% in other cities.

It should also be noted that $11 million will be allocated to the creation of green jobs, while $30 million is earmarked for the fight against irregular immigration and the reintegration of migrants. By 2023, according to Info MigrantsGuinea was the leading country of origin for migrants arriving in Italy, with 18,211 people.
