Belgium/Ans: a flea market where the sellers are... children
A fun-filled flea market was organized in Ans as part of the "Ans-les-Bains" event. The vendors were none other than children who came with their parents to part with their games and books. The event was organized by the Ans Coteaux neighborhood council.
The flea market was held in the Fernand Meukens school parking lot. A dozen children had a stand. Among them was Nora, aged 9. " I brought my books and dolls to sell," she explained. With the help of her mom, the little girl has sorted through her room and is determined to bring home a few euros. They will be used to fill the envelope that will enable her to go on a nice trip in a few years' time. It's essentially she who has set the prices: "For the dolls, it's 3 euros for example. I'm willing to negotiate. If we buy 3, I'm willing to make a price! "
Learning the value of things
Unfortunately, there aren't many customers on site, but Nora still sees things in a positive light.
"I can learn how much things are worth. You don't learn that at school, and it's by doing that you learn," she says.
A few "tables" away, there's Simon, 8, who has come with an impressive stock of small cars and various games. " Two for 5 euros and one for 5 euros too", he shouts to a potential buyer.
We want him to realize that you have to work to get things!
Simon's mom is on hand to help him out, and to set certain prices, but above all she wants this experience to teach him certain values. " If he wants new toys, he can, but then he has to part with the old ones to make money and buy new toys himself," she says.
This children's flea market was also an opportunity to brush up on maths thanks to the various sales made, a way of combining business with pleasure.
